JAKARTA, “tabloidnusantara.com” –The Armed Criminal Group (KKB) led by Egianus Kogoya have been posting photos and videos of Susi Air pilot several times while demanding their ransom to the Indonesian government since the hostage took place. For the last months, they intentionally show the pilot, Philips Mark, in their photo and video posts just to let the public know the condition of the pilot. The New Zealand Nationality pilot was even often seen to change his apparel many times and posing among the KKB members.
Philips’s face and gestures, even though slightly skinnier than before, show that he has been treated very well by Egianus Kogoya and his members. The relationship between Philips and his kidnapper looks more and more friendly, showed by the few photos and videos posted by the KKB. There was a sign of a little bit of boredom form Philips’s face, the pilot. However, from posts in the first 3 months, it was convinced that Philips was in very good health condition.

Nevertheless, after 5 months of hostage and the execution threat video, Philips Mark Mehrten was never seen anymore in any photo or videos posted by Egianus Kogoya. In Egianus Kogoya last video about his denial on the 5 billion ransoms uploaded on 8/9 July 2023, he was seen among his KKB members at their hiding delivering his statement without Philips by his side.
In the second video upload on 13 July 2023, Egianus and his members confirmed that Jeffrey Bomanak was never in the 3rd Command of TPNPB-OPM organization and Philips was also not seen next to Egianus when making the statement. This condition is obviously unusual as Philips was always seen next to Egianus every time he made his statement in every photo and video he uploaded. Where is Philips? There is a strong indication that the Pilot, Air Philips Mark Mehrten, is in poor health condition and worsening.

This indication is backed by the fact that for more than five months Philips has been living as a hostage in inadequate logistics and nutritional intake. This is due to the security forces that have been aggressively chasing down this group which often conducts acts of terror, resulting in limiting their movement and logistics. Moreover, KKB has to live on the run, going through deep valleys and steep terrains with freezing temperatures around 14 degrees Celsius. Thus, this extreme situation is a big challenge for Philips who never experienced the harsh condition of the forests and mountains of Nduga.
Philips’ deteriorating health could also be caused due to the fact that Papua is a malaria endemic area. Tropicana and Tersiana are common types of malaria in tropical areas and without intensive and adequate health care, once infected, could be fatal. Meanwhile, KKB members always live on the run, and it is very unlikely that they have adequate medical care for the pilot. Moreover, psychological factors can also affect the pilot’s condition. Being kidnaped by the armed criminal group might put the pilot under a lot of stress and further deteriorate the health condition of the pilot.
